Title: O BNDES e a Covid-19: uma atuação anticíclica, temporária e focalizada
Abstract: One of the main duties of development banks is to correct market failures. In crisis situations, the market is unable to solve such episodes on its own, thereby opening room for public policy interventions that may potentially generate social wellbeing. This paper discusses the BNDES’ counter-cyclical performance in the Covid-19 crisis. The characteristics of each measure, its main objectives, and a qualitative analysis of the results achieved are presented. In general, it can be stated that, during this period, the BNDES acted in a temporary and focused manner, contributing to the diret and indirect injection of BRL 154.8 billion (2.1% of the GDP) into the Brazilian economy.

Title: A crise brasileira de 1998/1999: origens e consequências
Abstract: This article presents the most relevant facts that characterised the evolution of the Brazilian economy before, during and after the currency crisis of the beginning of 1999. It presents the aggravating macroeconomic unbalances that developed until 1998, the crisis chronology, and tries to identify the reasons why the Brazilian economy reacted with relative success to the devaluation of its currency. The article wraps up with a cautiously optimistic evaluation of the perspectives of the Brazilian economy in its new policy regime.

Honey without money? Kaizen effects on Brazilian firms

Title: Honey without money? Kaizen effects on Brazilian firms
Abstract: One of the key drivers for a firm’s productivity growth is management. One management practice considered cost effective is Kaizen. Originally from Japan, the Kaizen basic concept is continuous improvement with the involvement of the full workforce. Using firm-level dataset from Brazil’s innovation and manufacturing surveys, this paper evaluates quantitatively whether Kaizen has impacted the performance of domestic firms. Our initial results suggest a productivity premium on Kaizen adopters, yet when it materializes is not detectable in the short-term. Moreover, impact on innovation is observable after Kaizen implementation. Understanding these outcomes with a qualitative approach, our analysis highlights the importance of Kaizen on innovation, especially by improving worker’s time at production line as well as the long-term vision of Kaizen on productivity.
